2013 Oil History Symposium

May 16 – 18, Pittsburgh, PA

CALL for Abstracts, Oral Presentations and Posters
Deadline: April 1, 2013

Submit abstracts to Bill Brice

The final plans have been made for the annual PHI Oil History Symposium and Field Trip for 2013, May 16-18.  We will be meeting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the birthplace of U. S. crude oil refining.  Our conference hotel, the historic Omni William Penn, is only a few blocks from where Samuel Kier had the first commercial refinery operating in the early 1850s. If all goes as planned, we will have some surprise guests at the Thursday evening reception.  We will be meeting just before the AAPG meeting which begins on the 19th, so come early and stay for both meetings – only requires one trip to get both meetings.  So we hope you will join us in Pittsburgh for our annual meeting and international oil history symposium.  Don’t forget to submit your abstract as well!

Although we met in Titusville in 2009 as part of the 150th anniversary celebration of the Drake Well, the Drake Well Museum has been totally renovated and the exhibits have all been changed since our last visit.  So we will be making a return trip to see the new exhibits.  Also in 2009 we had a stop at the home of Ida Tarbell, which, like the Drake Well Museum, has undergone some wonderful renovations, and we will stop there to see what has happened since our last visit four years ago.  The final stop will be at the Coolspring Power Museum, Coolspring, Pennsylvania, and spend some time with their marvelous collection of engines and power systems.  It will be an interesting trip and meeting; please make your plans to join us in Pittsburgh May 16-18, 2013.

LODGING:

HOTEL INFORMATION:  PHI has arranged for a block of 30 rooms at $185.00 (single/double) plus taxes to be set aside at the Omni William Penn Hotel, 530 Penn Place, Pittsburgh, PA 15219, in downtown Pittsburgh.  These are for May 16, 17, and 18, 2013.  All participants MUST individually contact the hotel at 1-800-THE-OMNI (843-6664) to make reservations.  When you telephone, identify yourself as part of the 2013 PHI Oil History Symposium to get the above rate.  Due to the AAPG meeting which immediately follows our meeting, hotel rooms are hard to find, so book early.  HOTEL DEADLINE IS APRIL 16, 2013.

NOTE:  If you are planning to stay on for the AAPG meeting, you must contact the AAPG hotel reservation system separately.   Reservations for the AAPG meeting are not handled directly by the Omni William Penn Hotel, unlike the one for the PHI Symposium.
